Stirling Touch were well represented at this years European Touch Championships, 10-13th July, in France, with five players from the club taking part.
Larry Irwin (Mens Open), Euan Kerr and Colin Jardine (Mens Over 30's), Stuart Smith (Mens Over 35's) and Yvonne Jardine (Womens Over 30's), all participated in the event in Massy, just south of Paris.
There were two final appearances - for Mens Over 30's and Mens Over 35's - though all three Stirling players eventually had to settle for silver as they went down in close games to England and Wales respectively.
In a very tough division, the Mens Open side, captained by Larry, made it through to battle it out for bronze medal but they were eventually pipped by the hosts France.
The Womens 30s faced up to their tough draw and though they didn't get their chance to compete in the medal stages they did edge out the French side 2-1 in their pool match.
Overall this was a fantastic tournament for Scotland, and for the Stirling players especially, as it shows just how far we have come in a short space of time. The next round of Scotland trials will take place at the Nationals, being held at Stirling Uni, on 23rd August. This is a fantastic opportunity for more Stirling players to be given their chance to shine in front of the selectors. Next year Scotland will be taking part in the Home Nations, in 2010 we have the next Euros and then in 2011 Scotland host the World Cup! Exciting times for the sport in Scotland lie ahead.
