Mainland Cup & Home Nations
Lots of Stirling players represented their country in 2009, with four of our number rewarded with gold medals! First up were Yvonne and Jill playing for the Women's 30's side at the Mainland Cup in Heidelberg, Germany over weekend of 25/26th June. The girls won every game across the two days and defeated hosts Germany in a closely fought final. Also appearing in Germany and claiming his first cap was Paul, who helped a Scotland Mixed Development side do themselves proud against the Open sides of many European countries, including a fine win over Austria.
On home soil the remaining Scotland sides gathered for the Home Nations in Glasgow on 8th August. Our gold medal winning Men's Masters were Jon and Stuart S who helped the side clinch the title in a final victory over Ireland. The Men's Seniors were a third Stirling composed, with Colin, Euan, Gordon and Phil all helping take the side to a second place finish. A new look Mixed Open did well against strong opponents with Karen, Si and Gregor becoming our first players to play in that division. The Men's Open with Larry and Stuart I, and Women's Open with Claire, both played some fantastic Touch and were a pleasure to watch, but unfortunately England proved just a little bit stronger in all Open divisions. This tournament provided debut caps for Jon, Stuart I, Gordon, Phil, Si, Karen and Gregor. Congratulations to all our international capped players.
Regional Championships
On August 23rd Stirling took their place to compete in Edinburgh for the Regional Championships. A strong Men's team was put together, coached by Larry and captained by Colin. The Stirling girls again joined forces with Glasgow for a combined region side. A few hastily arranged extra training sessions and we were off, both guys and girls against the defending champions first game. Unfortunately both suffered defeat as they came into game slightly cold. The Stirling/Glasgow girls went on to record a good win over Edinburgh B and a tight 1-0 win over Aberdeen. This set up a final game against the undefeated Edinburgh. Better performance this time out but unfortunately the home side were too strong, leaving our girls in second place. For the guys the team went on to became stronger each game, closely defeating Edinburgh B, then comfortably beating Glasgow before a fantastic performance in a very one sided win over Aberdeen. This cemented a record second place finish for Stirling Men, with the size of the regions we finished above there is no doubt it's a fantastic achievement.
