Other Tournaments
The first sign that the competitive season in underway is Aberdeen Spring Tournament. Fresh from winter training a strong team set up the road on 25th April. Fine displays from all players saw us finish top of our group and through to a cup semi final against Bareback Riders. Our best chance to take down the Edinburgh side
was lost as we were narrowly defeated. A play-off place against host side, Leopards, was our reward. Losing two very quick scores we fought back well to pull it back to a tie and set up a drop-off finale. A diving defensive save from Doug followed by a mazy run over the scoreline from Gregor gave us our deserved victory and 3rd place. The whole team stayed up in Aberdeen and partied hard, I'll not say any more about that...
Other tournament mentions go to a Flossie Posse side of new players, led by Jon, who competed in what's been recognised as the worst weather at a tournament when they took part in Glasgow Beginners event in May. Congratulations to the team who came a deserved 3rd place.
This year also saw our first entry to an English Touch series event when we descended on Newcastle in May. Setting up camp in 'Scots Corner' alongside Edinburgh side Superhands we enjoyed mixed success on the field, highlight being a battling draw against London Galaxy. Injuries (spot the recurring theme?) saw our team depleted as a concussion to Stuart meant a trip to hospital with Jon to hold his hand, leaving us bare minimum in a defeat to our campsite neighbours. All that is redundant though as playing Touch ended up secondary to what became a classic night out. The Stirling/Superhands posse took over the club house and led the place in drinking games, singing and ceilidh dancing. It was a long quiet drive home next day...
Glasgow League
Another first for our club was entry to an established league competition, this took place in Glasgow on Thursday evenings during the summer. With hindsight perhaps we set a rather ambitious challenge of having Men's, Mixed and Women's teams competing. Things started really well with large turnout and some good wins, but as the season took it's toll on players injuries and other commitments we latterly struggled to field teams. Top marks to the girls, in particular Karen, Yvonne and Steph, who regularly took to the field in Men's division to help get a team on the pitch. In the end the forfeits and weakened team proved too much and Flossie Posse finished 6th in the Mixed division. Slightly better for the Flossie Dudes who came 3rd in Men's and Spider Posse who were runners up in Women's.
Go Commando!
Early in 2009 a new team was born from the good relations between Stirling and Glasgow. Decked out head to toe in camouflage Go Commando set about their mission to infiltrate the Edinburgh leagues. Starting with a team building event at the inaugural Six Pack tournament in April they competed every Monday in the Edinburgh Touch Superleague. Coming up against some very tough opposition and some tense matches, they finished a very credible 4th. The team then ended the season with a further mission across the border, helping raise funds for the Percy Hedley Foundation at a charity tournament in Newcastle, where they were narrowly defeated by the locals in the final.
