The ladies were back up to the plate to face the might of the North East of Scotland and it was another tense affair. There was literally nothing in it in the first half and the Aberdonians were making life difficult for our gals. A score early in the second half for our ladies meant for an anxious close to the game, one score is never easy to defend but the girls defended fiercely and hung on for another scalp. Two wins out of three meant they were going to be in the final playing against the favourites Edinburgh A once again.
The mens competition was a straight league format and the guys were now up against our great friends from Glasgow. Last years runners up were going to be a stern test for the Stirling boys but this turned out to be one of the best performances of the day. Stirlings defence was outstanding keeping an excellent Glasgow attack mostly under wraps and in attack we finally managed to put Larry’s excellent training moves into a game situation. An 8:4 victory was a fantastic result which totally reflected Stirlings performance. Chuffed? Oh yes we were chuffed.
The Ladies final pitched Stirling/Glasgow against the undefeated Edinburgh side that had beaten our gals comfortably in the opening fixture. A tall order against a side packed with international players but our Ladies came out fighting once again and put themselves about the park with gusto. Unfortunately there was just too big a gulf (this year!) and Edinburgh triumphed again but not before the gals registered a superb individual score from Jill Baird which Edinburgh were less than happy about conceding (nae luck) as they were hoping to keep a clean sheet. Runners up was still a fantastic result for a team that was pulled together for this event; well done ladies ye did two regions proud!
Back to mens and Edinburgh A were undefeated all day and had therefore already secured the title as the guys took the field for the final time. Stirling were playing for second place when they took on the Aberdonians in what turned out to be our best match of the day. Everything just clicked, Larry and Gregor were ‘scooping’ machines getting in behind the Aberdeen defence on numerous occasions, the support play provided by Captain Colin Jardine and ALL the Stirling players was immense and we ran a tiring Aberdeen side ragged by the end, running out 11:2 winners to cap off a brilliant day of touch.
To finish runners up and only lose a single game was an immense performance for the guys, last year we won a single game. Excellent coaching from Larry in the run up to the tournament and inspiring leadership from Colin on the day were two major factors but it was the superb team performance from every single player that was the key. Every man gave their all and at the end of the day that’s all you can ask for. Next year …….. who knows, the only way is up!
